Herb Patience (Rumex patientia)

Perennial herb reaching up to 1.5m (5ft) high, easy to grow and thrives in most soil types. Edible herb with mild-tasting leaves making it an excellent vegetable (used much like spinach). Its leaves appear very early in milder climes (around February). Flowering occurs June-July. It is noted for attracting wildlife and is a very important food source for caterpillars of several types of butterflies. Juice and infusion of the root has been used as a poultice to treat various skin conditions. Note: leaves contain oxalic acid so to be eaten in small quantities. Oxalic acid content reduces on cooking. Always seek professional advice before using a herb medicinally
