Growing to 4.5m high and 4m wide, prefers well drained soil and a sunny position. Can tolerate windy sites. Makes an excellent hedging plant and although deciduous, is only without its leaves for a few months (roughly December-February). Produces small red, edible fruits (slightly astringent) – very good source of vitamin C.
Autumn Olive is a nitrogen-fixing plant – planting a few of these plants between fruit or nut trees has been shown to help increase yield.
